An article in the August 2016 issue of Boston Magazine references a study on dogfish at the Īį°®³Ō¹Ļā€™s Center for Excellence in Marine Sciences. The article, titled, ā€œCod is Dead ā€“ Is Dogfish the Answer?ā€ explores the abundance of dogfish and how fisheries and marine researchers are looking for ways to utilize the species.

The article discusses a quarter-million-dollar grant UNE received in conjunction with the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermanā€™s Alliance to study dogfish market development. It also quotes James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor of marine science, who explained their reproductive behavior. ā€œThereā€™s no time offā€”as soon as they give birth, they start over again,ā€ he said. ā€œTheyā€™re like little machines.ā€
