'Press Herald' highlights career paths of UNEās environmental studies students
On November 8, 2015, the Portland Press Herald featured a story about UNE students who plan to enter careers in environmental conservation.
The article discussed the aspirations of Joshua Barr (Environmental Studies, ā17), Emily Green (Environmental Studies and Political Science, ā15) and Shawn Nguyen (Environmental Studies major and Art minor, ā16) to work in the field of conservation after graduating from UNE. They are all students of Owen Grumbling, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, the recipient of the Maine Coast Heritage Trustās highest award for conservation work, the New England Environmental Protection Agencyās lifetime achievement award and the founder of UNEās Environmental Studies Department.
The students credited Grumblingās class with opening their eyes to the need for conservational management. āMost land managers weāve met through this class have expressed a concern in the next generation of conservationists,ā he said. āThey worry their kids and grandkids wonāt do the work theyāre doing.ā
The Press Herald interviewed Grumbling and his students during a field trip to Biddefordās Clifford Park for their advanced field-lab class.
