ā€˜The Economist’ publishes letter by Anouar Majid

On July 26, 2014, The Economist published a letter to the editor by Anouar Majid, Ph.D., vice president for Global Affairs and director of the Center for Global Humanities.  Majid’s letter was in response to a previously published story ā€œThe Arab world: Tethered by history.ā€

In his letter, Majid notes that Morocco is ā€œmore liberal and stable than most of the ā€˜progressive’ republics created in the aftermath of European colonialism.ā€  Arab states, in contrast, he argues, will only ā€œreverse the decline of their civilizationsā€ when ā€œthe entire Islamic legacy [is] subjected to rigorous intellectual analysis, much like when Judeo-Christian traditions were scrutinized by the probing questions of Enlightenment thinkers.ā€
